Autonomous vehicle technology faces operational and systemic challenges
Current autonomous vehicle technology often relies on remote human operators managing steering and pedals from control rooms rather than being fully self-driving. In San Francisco, Waymo robotaxis recently faced issues where vehicles ran out of battery and required towing during heavy traffic.
While companies and politicians promote autonomous driving to increase efficiency and safety, significant technical gaps remain. In Copenhagen, Green Mobility plans to introduce autonomous robotaxis and shared cars by early 2027.
Furthermore, existing driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control and lane centering, frequently underperform. Common issues include systems failing to slow down for roundabouts or T-junctions, incorrect speed limit recognition due to oncoming traffic data, and instances of unnecessary emergency braking.
