Autonomous vehicles to reshape insurance and accident liability

The rise of autonomous vehicle technology is poised to fundamentally shift how traffic accident liability and insurance are determined. Traditionally, insurance models have focused on human driver error and behavior. However, as driving assistance systems evolve into fully autonomous capabilities, the responsibility for accidents may shift toward vehicle software, sensors, manufacturers, and cybersecurity infrastructure.

To address this technological shift, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations recently adopted a global regulatory framework for driverless autonomous driving systems. This framework establishes common safety criteria, including safety management systems and continuous monitoring of vehicles during use.

Industry experts, including Murat Çiftçi, CEO of IBS Insurance and Reinsurance Brokerage, note that the insurance sector will need to redefine risk. Future investigations into accidents will likely move beyond driver conduct to examine the technical integrity and software reliability of the vehicle itself.
