Autumn auction season begins with high-value art and furniture sales

The autumn auction season has commenced with significant activity across major international houses and regional auctioneers.

At Sotheby’s in Paris, a Diego Giacometti console table created in 1980 sold for approximately $4.56 million. In New York, Christie’s reported strong results for the Alan Medaugh Collection, where Japanese woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, including ‘Plum Estate, Kameido’, exceeded expectations, with one print selling for $358,400. In London, Johnny Marr’s 1982 Rickenbacker 330 guitar was featured in recent sales.

Regionally, Hudson Valley Auctioneers in New York held a multi-estate sale featuring over 500 lots. Notable results included a pair of wood decoy ducks that sold for $13,125 and a 19th-century oak country counter that fetched $10,000. The sale also saw interest in Midcentury Modern furniture and Abstract Expressionist art from the 1940s.
