Autumn composting errors can attract rats to gardens
Improper compost management during autumn can attract rats to residential gardens within 48 hours. As temperatures drop, rodents seek warm, humid environments rich in food.
According to ADEME recommendations, a common error is placing food scraps such as meat, cheese, bread, or saucy dishes directly on the surface of the compost pile. These protein and carbohydrate-rich items can undergo anaerobic fermentation if the pile is poorly aerated, releasing strong volatile compounds. These odors act as an irresistible signal for brown or black rats, which may then begin to establish nests and dig tunnels beneath the compost.
