Autumn driving safety: Experts warn of wet leaves and fog

As autumn weather brings rain, fog, and lower visibility, driving experts are issuing warnings and maintenance advice to ensure road safety.

Road organizations like the ÖAMTC warn that wet leaves can be as dangerous as ice, creating a slippery film that causes tires to lose traction. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, maintain increased following distances, and avoid abrupt maneuvers. Additionally, low sun and sudden fog banks can significantly impair visibility.

To prepare for these conditions, experts recommend several vehicle checks. Key maintenance tasks include inspecting windshield wipers, tire tread and pressure, and ensuring lights and defogging systems are functional. Keeping the interior dry by removing wet items like umbrellas can also prevent excessive window condensation.

When driving in fog, experts suggest using low-beam headlights, as high beams can reflect off water droplets and further obscure the view. Drivers should also be cautious on bridges and overpasses, where frost may occur even if other road surfaces appear clear.
