Winter driving safety and seasonal changes across Europe
As autumn progresses, several European countries are implementing seasonal changes regarding timekeeping and road safety regulations. In Serbia, daylight saving time ends on October 25, 2026, with clocks moving back one hour at 3:00 AM.
Winter equipment mandates are approaching in multiple regions. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, mandatory winter equipment begins on November 1, with fines for non-compliance set at 40 KM. Experts suggest using a 2 KM coin to check tire tread depth, recommending a minimum of 4 mm for safety, despite the legal minimum of 1.6 mm. In Croatia, winter equipment requirements for specific road sections begin on November 15, 2026, while the obligation to use daytime running lights starts on November 1.
In the Czech Republic, tire prices have risen, with a set of winter tires costing an average of 10,768 CZK. Safety experts also warn pedestrians and cyclists about reduced visibility during the darker months, emphasizing the importance of reflective gear. Similarly, Slovakian police have advised drivers not to rely solely on automatic daytime running lights during rain or fog, as rear lights may not activate, reducing vehicle visibility.
