Science and Art Hill 2026 festival opens in Matsudo

The international festival ‘Science and Art Hill 2026’ is being held on October 24 and 25 at the Totei Estate, Matsunotei, and Toteigaoka Historical Park in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture. Under the theme ‘Weaving the Microcosmos,’ the event explores the intersection of science, art, and nature.

A central feature is ‘The Garden Experiment,’ an international collaborative project between Japanese and Swiss research institutions. This initiative uses citizen science to study soil microbial diversity. The festival will showcase research findings through visual and auditory installations, including a tapestry using traditional Japanese colors to represent microbial ratios and ‘Songs of the Microcosmos,’ which converts soil DNA data into music and video.

Other highlights include a ‘Soil Gallery’ displaying samples from 115 locations across Japan, and works by the Budapest-based pHen ARTIST COLLECTIVE, which utilizes plant-derived inks and specialized tools to bridge science and design.
