Autumn harvest storage tips to prevent food waste

As the autumn harvest arrives, experts are sharing methods to preserve seasonal produce such as pumpkins, apples, carrots, beets, cabbage, and mushrooms to prevent food waste.

Author and content creator Anna Panna, in collaboration with Samsung, advises on proper storage environments. While many fresh items benefit from the cool environment of a refrigerator, certain vegetables like pumpkins, potatoes, onions, and garlic should be kept in a dry, dark, and cool room to maintain quality.

Proper organization is also essential to avoid spoilage caused by gas emissions. For instance, apples, pears, and ripe pumpkins release ethylene gas, which can accelerate the ripening and decay of nearby vegetables. Additionally, potatoes and onions should not be stored together, as the combination can encourage both to sprout or rot.
