Autumn hazards pose poisoning risks to dogs

Veterinarian Hanne Friis from AniCura Denmark is warning dog owners about seasonal hazards found in nature during autumn. Specifically, horse chestnuts, mushrooms, and acorns pose significant poisoning risks to dogs.

Horse chestnuts contain aesculin, a substance that is toxic to dogs. The toxicity extends to the tree's leaves, flowers, and bark. Beyond chemical poisoning, consuming chestnuts can cause physical obstructions in the intestines. Symptoms of poisoning, such as vomiting and diarrhea, typically appear within two days. Owners are advised to keep pets away from fallen chestnuts and indoor chestnut decorations, as puppies and younger dogs are particularly at risk due to their curiosity.
