Autumn health: Managing vitamin D and seasonal wellness

As autumn approaches, shorter days and reduced sunlight exposure can lead to lower levels of vitamin D, a nutrient essential for bone and muscle health, immune system function, and cardiovascular and brain processes. Nutritionist Jessica Falcone from IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele notes that while skin synthesis of vitamin D via UVB rays decreases during colder months due to less sun and more clothing, not everyone necessarily requires supplements.

To support the body during the seasonal transition, herbal infusions can serve as natural allies. Combinations such as ginger, lemon, and echinacea can provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, alongside vitamin C, to support the immune system. For digestive support during changes in eating habits, infusions containing fennel seeds, green anise, or cardamom may help regulate gastric motility, while warming spices like cinnamon and cloves can aid digestion.
