Autumn lawn care: Regional mowing schedules and leaf mulching tips
Seasonal lawn care and yard maintenance strategies are shifting as experts suggest more efficient ways to prepare gardens for winter. In the UK, the recommended time to stop mowing varies by region to prevent mold and frost damage. Guidelines suggest stopping in early October for Scotland, late October to early November for Northern England, mid-November for the Midlands, and mid-to-late November for Southern England.
Regarding autumn chores, researchers suggest skipping the bagging and hauling of fallen leaves. Instead, mulch mowing—chopping leaves directly into the turf—can recycle nutrients into the soil. Research from Michigan State University indicates that mulching a six-inch layer of maple and oak leaves can promote quicker spring green-up, reduce the need for fertilizer, and help prevent weed germination without harming established turfgrass.
