Health experts warn of slip hazards from wet autumn leaves
Medical experts are warning that wet autumn leaves on sidewalks can act like soap, creating a significant slip hazard. Frank Hildebrand, President of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU), notes that these conditions can lead to serious injuries, such as hip fractures and severe head trauma.
Older adults are particularly vulnerable due to potential declines in muscle strength, balance, and reaction time. Factors such as untreated vision problems or medications that cause dizziness can further increase the risk. Experts from the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) advise against reducing physical activity to avoid falls, as inactivity can actually weaken muscles and worsen the risk over time.
To mitigate these dangers, specialists recommend wearing sturdy shoes with non-slip soles, using handrails, and choosing well-lit paths. Regular exercise, including strength training and coordination exercises, is encouraged to maintain stability.
