Autumn leaf management and safety guidelines in Germany and Hamburg

As autumn progresses, authorities and consumer organizations are highlighting the importance of leaf removal to prevent slipping hazards on sidewalks and streets. In Germany, the responsibility for sweeping paths generally lies with property owners. If a municipality has delegated sidewalk maintenance to homeowners, they must keep paths clear to avoid liability for damages resulting from falls. In such cases, private liability insurance or property owner liability insurance typically covers damages.

In Hamburg, the Stadtreinigung Hamburg (SRH) has deployed up to 590 employees to maintain street safety and prevent clogged drains. The city has launched its seasonal leaf bag collection, running from mid-October to mid-December. Residents can purchase 100-liter leaf bags for 2.40 euros, with collection dates scheduled across all districts. Alternatively, households can dispose of leaves for free at recycling centers or use organic waste bins.
