Autumn gardening: Managing fallen leaves and winter preparation

As autumn progresses, gardeners are advised on the best practices for managing fallen leaves and preparing outdoor spaces for winter. Experts suggest that fallen leaves are a valuable resource rather than waste. When used as mulch, leaves from maple, lime, and fruit trees decompose quickly, protecting soil and roots from temperature fluctuations. However, leaves from oak and walnut contain juglone, which can inhibit plant growth; these should be used in smaller quantities in compost or placed under hedges to allow for slower decomposition.

Retaining leaves in undisturbed garden corners provides essential winter shelter for insects and small animals. While beneficial for beds, leaves should be cleared from lawns, paths, and terraces to prevent mold, fungal diseases, and slipping hazards.

For seasonal preparations, balcony owners are encouraged to protect sensitive plants from frost and store outdoor furniture and textiles to prevent moisture damage. Additionally, when collecting natural materials like branches or cones for holiday decorations, individuals must adhere to local regulations. In certain protected areas or when collecting in large quantities for commercial use, significant fines may apply under nature conservation laws.
