Autumn pest management: Tips for deterring spiders and rats

As autumn approaches, residents are advised on methods to manage common household pests such as spiders and rats.

To deter spiders without using chemicals, certain plants can be used as natural barriers. Lavender, mint, and basil are noted for their strong scents, which act as deterrents. For best results, lavender should be in well-drained soil, mint should be kept in its own pot to prevent spreading, and basil requires regular watering and partial shade.

Concurrently, there is an increased risk of rat infestations as they move from fields toward residential areas for warmth. Middelfart Municipality has announced upcoming rat control measures on rural properties. To minimize risk, authorities recommend securing downpipes with mesh, ensuring ventilation channels and basement windows are properly sealed, and maintaining a gap between building walls and vegetation. Additionally, residents are advised to manage waste properly, avoid bird feeding if rats are present, and secure floor drains to prevent entry.
