Autumn plant fertilization depends on species and soil
Whether to fertilize plants during autumn depends on the specific plant type, soil conditions, and the fertilizer used. According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), most plants in open ground, particularly mature trees and shrubs, typically do not require regular fertilization as they can extract sufficient nutrients from the soil.
However, plants in containers, vegetables, fruit crops, and those showing clear nutrient deficiencies may benefit from extra feeding. Experts warn against using nitrogen-rich fertilizers late in the season, specifically after September, as this can trigger new, soft growth that is highly vulnerable to frost and cold temperatures before winter arrives.
