Autumn plants and seasonal gardening tips
Various plants offer seasonal interest and durability for autumn landscapes and cemetery decorations. Elaeagnus umbellata, also known as silver bush or wild olive, produces distinctive red berries covered in silvery-gold spots that resemble glitter. Native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula, these berries serve as a natural substitute for cranberry or pomegranate in culinary uses.
For autumn floral arrangements, several hardy alternatives to chrysanthemums are available. Heathers (Calluna) and ericas are frost-resistant perennials that bloom from September to November. Autumn asters (marcinki) provide intense colors in shades of purple, blue, pink, and white, remaining viable until temperatures drop to -5°C. Other durable options for late-season displays include Senecio cineraria, ornamental cabbage, and Gaultheria procumbens.
