Autumn plants for gardens and balconies

Various plant species can be used to maintain color in gardens and on balconies during the autumn season. Popular choices include perennials such as thyme, which can grow up to one meter tall and provide nectar for insects, and garden chrysanthemums, which thrive as nights lengthen.

Other suitable plants include sedums, which are drought-resistant due to their fleshy leaves, and Rudbeckia or Echinacea, which provide yellow and copper tones. Heathers are also highly recommended for autumn balconies, particularly in shades of purple, pink, or white, when planted in acidic, permeable soil.

Ornamental cabbage is another notable option, as its rosette-like leaves intensify in color—ranging from cream to purple—when temperatures drop. To ensure plant health, it is advised to use pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot and to protect sensitive plants from strong, cold winds.
