Autumn seasonal fruits: Persimmon care, plum benefits, and rose hip harvesting
Various autumn fruits and plants offer unique seasonal benefits and require specific care. Persimmons (Diospyros kaki), native to East Asia, thrive in sunny, sheltered locations with well-drained soil. While they can tolerate temperatures between -15 and -20 degrees Celsius depending on the variety, protection from cold winds and late spring frosts is recommended for successful fruit ripening.
Plums are noted for their high fiber, antioxidant, and vitamin content. Endocrinologist Andra Naku highlights that plums contain sorbitol, which can aid digestive transit. However, consumers should monitor portion sizes, particularly with dried plums, as they contain more concentrated natural sugars and calories.
Rose hips (Rosa canina) are typically ready for harvest in autumn, often becoming softer after a light frost. When harvesting, it is important to select healthy, undamaged fruits and avoid areas exposed to pesticides. Due to irritating hairs around the seeds, rose hips should be carefully cleaned or strained when prepared for tea or food.
