Autumn seasonal produce and preservation methods

Autumn offers a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables in Romania, including plums, grapes, apples, pears, quinces, pumpkins, beets, and cabbage. Nutritionists recommend utilizing these accessible options for daily meals.

Specific nutritional benefits are noted for certain autumn foods. Grapes, particularly dark varieties, provide antioxidants like resveratrol and anthocyanins, though their sugar content should be monitored. Cranberries are highlighted as a superfood containing vitamins C, E, and K1, as well as manganese and copper. To maximize fiber intake, it is recommended to consume whole fruits rather than juices.

For those with a surplus of plums, preservation methods such as freezing or canning are effective. To freeze plums, they should be washed, pitted, sliced, and frozen in a single layer before being transferred to airtight containers. This allows them to be used later in desserts, smoothies, or jams.
