Autumn weather hazards increase road and railway safety risks

Autumn weather conditions, including rain, fallen leaves, wet surfaces, dense fog, and earlier darkness, significantly impact road safety. These factors reduce tire grip and increase braking distances, making it essential for drivers to adjust their speed to current conditions rather than relying solely on legal limits.

Maintaining a safe following distance is critical. On highways and expressways, the minimum distance should be at least half the vehicle's speed in kilometers per hour, though greater distances are recommended in difficult weather. Drivers are also advised to perform technical checks on tires, wipers, air filters, and lighting systems.

At railway crossings, visibility is further compromised by fog and light reflections on wet pavement. Drivers should avoid routine-based complacency, as conditions can change rapidly. Distractions such as mobile phone use or adjusting navigation should be avoided to maintain necessary concentration.
