Autumn wellness: Protecting lung health through TCM and proper breathing
As autumn brings drier air and temperature fluctuations, health experts are highlighting methods to protect lung health and manage symptoms of dryness, such as dry coughs and throat irritation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) suggests using ‘Er Dong Tang’ (Two Winter Soup), a combination of Asparagus cochinchinensis (Tian Dong) and Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Dong). Tian Dong is noted for clearing lung fire and nourishing kidney yin, while Mai Dong helps moisten the lungs and stomach. A recommended tea includes these two herbs with Glehnia divided (Sha Shen), pear, and dried tangerine peel.
Regarding physical activity, experts warn against vigorous deep breathing or abdominal breathing in dry, cold outdoor air. Such intense breathing can bypass the nose's natural filtration and warming process, potentially irritating the bronchi or causing respiratory alkalosis. Instead, breathing should be slow, fine, deep, and even, preferably through the nose.
Dietary recommendations for the season include lily bulb and white fungus soup, white radish with tangerine peel water, and Chuan Bei pear soup to help soothe the respiratory system.
