Avalanche blockchain faces major DeFi exploits and asset freezes

The Avalanche blockchain is experiencing significant security incidents involving decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. A security breach at a Tranche Vault, associated with Valinor Digital and Fence, resulted in the loss of approximately $1.01 million in USDC. The attacker reportedly utilized a flash loan to manipulate the vault’s share count to facilitate the withdrawal.

In a separate but related development, the DeFi lender Aave has frozen its lending markets on Avalanche. This action was taken to prevent a suspected hacker, linked to a multi-billion-dollar unauthorized outflow from Binance hot wallets, from using stolen AVAX as collateral to borrow other assets.

Major stablecoin issuers have also intervened to mitigate the impact of the suspected Binance hack. Tether has frozen approximately $1.5 billion in related assets, while Circle has frozen roughly $823 million. Binance has characterized the event as a hack but stated that user funds remain secure as investigations continue.
