Portillo Ski Center avalanche kills at least three hikers in Chile

An avalanche near the Portillo Ski Center in the Chilean Andes has resulted in at least three deaths and several injuries. The incident occurred near Laguna del Inca as a group of hikers was ascending toward the summit of Cerro Los Tres Hermanos.

Authorities from Senapred and local officials reported that the hikers were caught in a massive movement of snow and rocks, which swept them into the freezing waters of the lagoon. While initial reports varied on the exact number of casualties, confirmed reports indicate three fatalities and between four and five injuries. One victim was identified as Magdalena Acuña Jiménez, daughter of Chilean actress Luz Jiménez.

Local officials, including the Mayor of Los Andes, Manuel Rivera, noted that the group was in a restricted, non-authorized area for excursions. Reports indicate that the group had been previously warned by hotel security regarding the high risk of snow slides in the area, particularly during the current season of high snow accumulation. Rescue operations involving Carabineros, firefighters, and aerial units faced logistical challenges due to the frozen state of the lagoon and the risk of further avalanches, leading to a temporary suspension of search efforts.
