Avangrid selected to build 1,200 MW transmission line in Maine
Iberdrola, through its U.S. subsidiary Avangrid, has been selected by the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) to develop a new 1,200 MW transmission line. This project is part of the Northern Maine Renewable Energy Development Program, which aims to unlock wind energy potential in Aroostook County by connecting it to the New England electrical grid managed by ISO New England.
The infrastructure will utilize existing electrical corridors to minimize permitting risks and will include 345 kV overhead lines and a new substation in Haynesville. This transmission capacity is essential for the progress of an 800 MW onshore wind farm project proposed by Clearway Energy Group, which would become the largest onshore wind farm in the state.
