Critical reception for the film remains mixed. While some viewers praise the spectacle, others have pointed to narrative weaknesses, specifically regarding the characterization of the new Na’vi group, the Ash Clan, and its leader, Varang. Critics have noted that despite intentions to move away from simplistic moral binaries, the film's treatment of its antagonists can feel superficial.
