Aveiro introduces new mobility measures and free transport initiatives

During the European Mobility Week, several new initiatives were announced to promote sustainable transport in the Aveiro region of Portugal. The Mayor of Aveiro, Luís Souto, revealed that starting in November, ferry services will be free for residents of São Jacinto. Other measures include one hour of free use of shared bicycles (BUGA) and metrobus connections to the neighboring municipality of Ílhavo.

Additionally, Transdev Portugal launched a marketing campaign that converts “environmental fines” into free bus trips. Hundreds of these vouchers were distributed to drivers in municipalities served by Ave Mobilidade, Linhas do Tâmega e Sousa, and Aveirobus. Instead of a penalty, the vouchers allow for a free round-trip bus journey, encouraging drivers to transition from private vehicles to public transportation.

The city of Aveiro is also focusing on increasing pedestrian zones, including a pilot project on Rua Eça de Queiróz, and reviewing circulation plans for Avenida Lourenço Peixinho to improve urban livability.
