Aveiro weather event caused by downburst, IPMA reports
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has identified a ‘downburst’ as the cause of the severe meteorological instability that struck the Aveiro district on September 5, 2026.
The phenomenon, characterized by a rapid downdraft of air from a thunderstorm cloud that spreads upon hitting the ground, resulted in intense wind gusts, heavy rain, and large hail with diameters exceeding two centimeters. The region of Albergaria-a-Velha experienced the most significant impact.
Reported damages include destruction to roofs, vehicles, urban furniture, and uprooted or broken trees. At the time of the event, a yellow thunderstorm warning was active for the district, alerting residents to the possibility of heavy rain, hail, and intense wind gusts.
