Avellino prison officials seize mobile phone from inmate

Authorities at the Avellino prison in Italy have seized a mobile phone and SIM card from an inmate following an extraordinary search. The operation was conducted after suspicions arose regarding the use of an unauthorized device within the facility.

Reports indicate the inmate had been using the phone in the restroom area to speak with his wife. The search was carried out following activities in the prison infirmary and involved personnel from the General Surveillance, the Prison Police stationed at the infirmary, and additional support units.

The Autonomous Prison Police Union (SAPPE) praised the professionalism and intuition of the officers involved. Union representatives Donato Capece and Marianna Argenio noted that unauthorized mobile phones pose a significant threat to prison security, as they can be used to organize illicit activities or maintain criminal control from within the institution.
