Avellino schools face declining enrollment amid demographic shifts

Schools in the province of Avellino are facing a decline in student numbers due to falling birth rates. For the 2026/2027 school year, kindergarten and primary school enrollments are expected to drop by 282 students, a decrease of approximately 1.4 percent. The primary school sector is seeing the most significant impact, with a projected loss of 264 students.

Despite the decrease in total students, the educational infrastructure is shifting rather than shrinking. There is a notable increase in full-time primary school classes, which have risen from 294 to 320, serving 365 more students than the previous year. Additionally, the number of kindergarten sections and available places has seen a slight increase.

In conjunction with these demographic shifts, the Asl Avellino is continuing its ‘Scuole promotrici di salute’ (Schools promoting health) program. This initiative, part of the Regional Prevention Plan, integrates health prevention, mental well-being, road safety, and environmental respect into the standard curriculum. The program previously involved 25 schools, 650 teachers, and 1,500 students across the Irpinia region.
