Avetrana illegal nursing home seizure sparks abuse investigation

An illegal nursing home in Avetrana has been seized following the ‘Vetus’ operation conducted by the Carabinieri NAS of Taranto. Investigators allege that elderly residents suffering from severe physical and mental pathologies were subjected to mistreatment, humiliation, deprivation, and abandonment.

The discovery has prompted strong condemnation from UIL Pensionati Puglia and the UILP Coordination of Taranto. Union leader Tiziana Carella has called for immediate intervention from the Puglia Region to ensure strict adherence to healthcare regulations and to improve oversight of care facilities.

The union is demanding that regional accreditation processes move beyond mere formal compliance. They are calling for the establishment of a permanent monitoring system involving representative retiree organizations to verify the quality of care, staff adequacy, and the safety and living conditions of non-self-sufficient elderly citizens.
