Avi Lewis Leads Canada’s NDP, Emphasizes Election Readiness

Avi Lewis was elected leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in Canada, becoming the first head of a major federal party with a public record of supporting the Palestinian BDS movement. Shortly after taking office, Lewis said he will not seek a seat in the House of Commons until the party is prepared for a general election, focusing instead on building campaign capacity across the country.

Lewis has been campaigning with NDP candidates in Montreal byelection ridings, meeting voters and taking intensive French language lessons to improve his political communication. He indicated that the party aims to be “election‑ready” within the next year and will run serious campaigns in every riding before he personally runs for office. The NDP’s internal leadership team also includes Libby Davies, elected vice‑president, and Niall Ricardo, elected president.

Lewis’ leadership marks a shift toward stronger advocacy on human‑rights issues within the party, while his immediate priority remains preparing the NDP for the next federal election.
