Aviation authorities tighten lithium-ion battery regulations

Aviation authorities and airlines are increasing restrictions on lithium-ion batteries following rising safety concerns and incidents. A recent event involving Swiss flight LX52, which diverted to Dublin after smoke was detected in the cabin due to an external battery, has highlighted the risks of thermal runaway and short circuits.

Regulatory bodies including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have issued warnings regarding power banks. IATA reports that 44% of travelers carry power banks, while 45% mistakenly believe they can be checked in luggage. In response, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) approved new specifications limiting passengers to two batteries and prohibiting recharging on board.

Several major airlines, including Lufthansa Group, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific, have implemented stricter policies, ranging from usage bans to specific storage requirements under seats.
