Aviation authorities warn against packing power banks in hold luggage
Airlines and aviation authorities are issuing warnings regarding the transport of power banks and lithium batteries to prevent fire risks during flights. Wizz Air has informed passengers that power banks, spare lithium batteries, and e-cigarettes must only be carried in cabin baggage and never in checked hold luggage. This is due to the risk of devices overheating or accidentally activating, which can lead to dangerous situations.
The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also highlighted that many travelers remain unaware of these safety rules. Lithium-ion batteries are prone to thermal runaway, a process where temperature rises rapidly and can lead to explosions or fires. To mitigate these risks, it is recommended to store these devices in their original packaging or separate plastic bags to prevent short circuits caused by contact with metal objects like keys or coins.
While mobile phones, tablets, and laptops may be placed in checked luggage if they are completely powered off and protected from damage, power banks and spare batteries are strictly prohibited from the hold. Additionally, passengers are advised not to use electronic devices to charge other equipment while on board, and some regulations limit passengers to two power banks per person.
