Aviation decarbonization focuses on sustainable fuels and contrail mitigation

Aviation decarbonization efforts are focusing on two primary technical areas: sustainable fuels and the mitigation of contrails. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), including bio-SAF and e-SAF, are currently the most mature technological solution. These “drop-in” fuels can be blended with conventional kerosene and used in existing engines and infrastructure without modification. Regulatory frameworks, such as the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation, aim to accelerate their adoption by mandating minimum usage percentages.

Complementary to fuel changes, research suggests that managing aircraft contrails—the white lines formed by water vapor condensation at high altitudes—could significantly delay global warming. A study by Klima Consulting for Transport & Environment indicates that reducing contrail-related warming by half starting in 2030 could delay the temperature rise attributable to aviation by approximately ten years. This could be achieved through cost-effective measures like slightly adjusting flight routes or schedules to avoid atmospheric conditions conducive to contrail formation.
