Aviation experts warn against specific clothing for flight safety
Aviation safety experts and cabin crew are advising passengers on the risks associated with certain types of clothing and footwear during flights, particularly in emergency situations.
Experts warn against wearing highly synthetic materials, such as those found in many leggings and sportswear. Aviation safety expert Christine Negroni notes that synthetic fibers can melt or catch fire easily, potentially adhering to the skin during a fire. While flame-retardant clothing is the safest option, it is often impractical for daily use. However, layering can mitigate risk; wearing synthetic fabrics as an outer layer over cotton may slow the spread of fire to the skin.
Regarding footwear, experts recommend avoiding sandals, flip-flops, and high heels. During an emergency evacuation, passengers may encounter wet, oily, or burning surfaces that require stable, closed-toe shoes. Additionally, short clothing such as skirts or shorts is discouraged, as it provides less protection against low cabin temperatures and potential injuries when using emergency slides.
