Aviation Industry Austria holds symposium to discuss 2040+ strategy

At the 24th Aviation Industry Austria (AIA) symposium held at Vienna Airport, approximately 250 representatives from the aviation, industry, science, and political sectors gathered to discuss the ‘Austria Aviation Strategy 2040+’. The AIA presented a position paper outlining ten strategic priorities aimed at strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of the Austrian aviation location amidst global crises.

Leadership changes were announced within the AIA, with FACC CEO Robert Machtlinger succeeding Julian Jäger as President. Jäger will continue in the role of Vice President.

Discussions also addressed declining passenger numbers. Data from Vienna Airport indicated that passenger volume from January to August was 4% lower than the previous year, with a 6.9% decrease recorded in August. Industry stakeholders cited the state aviation levy as a significant barrier to recovery and called for its reduction or abolition to maintain competitiveness against foreign hubs. Additionally, airspace closures due to the war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East continue to impact operational costs and flight routing.
