Aviation industry calls for reduction of Austrian flight levy

Aviation Industry Austria (AIA) and the Association of Austrian Airports (AÖV) are calling for the abolition or significant reduction of the national flight levy to remain competitive. AIA Managing Director Peter Malanik suggests that reducing the levy could attract 2.5 million additional passengers annually to Austrian airports, generating 188 million euros in value creation and potentially creating 2,500 jobs.

Industry representatives highlight a growing competitive disadvantage, noting that only seven of the 27 EU member states impose a national flight levy. Currently, Germany is the only neighboring country with such a charge. Data from January to September 2026 shows that while passenger numbers at Vienna International Airport fell by 4.5%, Bratislava Airport saw its passenger volume more than double, suggesting travelers are shifting to nearby foreign hubs.

The current levy generates between 160 and 180 million euros annually for the state, but officials warn that declining passenger numbers could reduce these revenues. While the federal government has planned a 30 million euro relief measure, industry leaders describe it as merely a first step.
