Aviation industry challenges and costs of in-flight Wi-Fi
Airlines often charge extra for in-flight Wi-Fi due to the high costs of specialized communication systems, satellite infrastructure, and the technical maintenance required to provide connectivity at high altitudes. Unlike terrestrial mobile networks, aircraft must use dedicated equipment to transmit data via satellites and ground stations.
Capacity is another significant factor, as hundreds of passengers must share a limited bandwidth. To manage this, airlines frequently offer tiered service levels, such as basic messaging versus full internet access for streaming. While some carriers like British Airways and Emirates are integrating Starlink technology to offer free, unlimited Wi-Fi on certain flights, many still rely on paid packages to offset the operational costs of maintaining these systems.
