Aviation industry turns to AI to mitigate contrail climate impact

Aviation industry experts and environmentalists are focusing on reducing the climate impact of condensation trails, or contrails. While contrails are formed by water vapor freezing around soot particles in cold, humid air, persistent trails can create artificial clouds that trap heat in the atmosphere. Research suggests that while only 3% of global flights are responsible for 80% of contrail-related warming, the total climate impact of these trails is comparable to CO2 emissions.

Technological solutions are emerging to mitigate this effect. Google has developed an artificial intelligence system that combines satellite observations and meteorological data to predict where persistent contrails are likely to form. By using this data, pilots can make minor altitude adjustments to avoid specific atmospheric layers.

In trials conducted with Cathay Pacific, more than 80 out of 100 selected flights successfully used avoidance trajectories. Satellite image analysis indicated that these flights reduced the warming effect of their contrails by approximately 40%. Meanwhile, Air France is also exploring initiatives to identify flight paths that could minimize these environmental impacts.
