Aviation safety protocols for emergency landings during transoceanic flights rely heavily on ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) regulations. These rules determine how long a twin-engine aircraft, such as a Boeing 737 MAX, can fly with a single engine before needing to reach a suitable airport. For certain models, this duration can be up to 180 minutes.
In the Atlantic Ocean, pilots have several established emergency landing hubs, including Gander in Canada, Shannon in Ireland, Keflavik in Iceland, and airports in the Azores. Flight paths, such as those between London and New York, are often routed near these locations to ensure safety.
In contrast, the Pacific Ocean presents significantly higher risks due to its vastness and sparse population. While long-range aircraft with high ETOPS ratings, like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350, can traverse more central oceanic regions, other aircraft must follow routes closer to small islands or military bases to remain within reach of emergency landing sites.
