Aviation safety rules mandate power banks stay in hand luggage
Aviation safety guidelines from Heathrow Airport and IATA emphasize that power banks, spare lithium batteries, and vaping devices must be kept in carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage. This requirement is due to the risk of thermal runaway, where battery damage or short circuits can cause overheating. Incidents involving lithium-ion batteries are easier for crew to manage if they occur in the cabin rather than the aircraft hold.
Capacity limits are typically measured in watt-hours (Wh). Under IATA guidance, passengers are generally permitted to carry up to two power banks rated at 100 Wh or less in cabin baggage. Batteries between 100 Wh and 160 Wh may require prior approval from the operating airline, while those exceeding 160 Wh are typically prohibited on commercial passenger flights. Travelers are advised to ensure battery ratings are legible for security verification and to check specific airline policies, as individual carriers may enforce stricter rules.
