Tan Son Nhat International Airport suspended twice due to UAV sightings
Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Vietnam experienced significant flight disruptions on the evening of August 11 following multiple unauthorized Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sightings near the airport. The airport was forced to suspend takeoff and landing operations twice to ensure aviation safety.
The first disruption occurred between 18:14 and 19:14 after flight crews reported drones at altitudes of approximately 3,000 feet and 1,800 feet. A second suspension was triggered around 19:34 after a third drone was detected in the southwest direction of the airport.
According to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), the incident affected dozens of flights. Vietnam Airlines reported that nearly 70 flights and approximately 10,000 passengers were impacted. Some aircraft were forced to enter holding patterns, while others were diverted to alternative airports such as Can Tho or Cam Ranh.
The Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) and the Ho Chi Minh City Command are currently investigating the matter to identify the operators of the drones and address the security breach.
