Aviation technology reduces global baggage mishandling rates

Global airlines have achieved a 23% reduction in baggage mishandling rates over the last fiscal year, according to a SITA report. The irregularity rate dropped to 4.9 bags per 1,000 passengers, down from 6.3 in the previous year.

This improvement is attributed to significant technological investments, including artificial intelligence for real-time risk identification, biometric recognition, RFID tags for tracking, and consumer-facing tracking apps. In the United States, Airlines for America reported a 6.3% decrease in incidents due to modernized ground support systems at major hubs.

Despite these operational gains, baggage issues remain a major financial burden, costing the industry approximately $6.3 billion. The report notes that a single lost bag can offset the net profit generated from selling more than 30 seats, meaning just five incidents on a single flight can eliminate the entire route's net profit.
