Aviloo study analyzes 500,000 EV batteries to track capacity degradation
A large-scale study by diagnostics company Aviloo has analyzed over 500,000 electric vehicle (EV) battery tests conducted between 2022 and 2026. The research evaluated 20 popular electric car models to determine how battery capacity degrades over 50,000, 100,000, and 150,000 kilometers.
The findings indicate that most EV batteries retain high levels of capacity even after significant mileage. At the 150,000 km mark, 16 of the 20 models studied maintained a median State of Health (SoH) of at least 90%. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 emerged as a top performer, retaining approximately 93% to 97% of its original capacity depending on the specific test interval. The Mercedes-Benz EQA also showed high resilience.
However, the study noted significant variations between individual vehicles of the same model, with capacity differences reaching up to 13.5%. Models with smaller batteries, such as the Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf, tended to show faster degradation rates, likely due to the requirement for more frequent charging cycles to cover similar distances.
