Spain's summer initiatives spotlight beach accessibility and senior fitness

During the 2026 summer season, several Spanish programmes aim to improve public health and accessibility. Health experts recommend a low‑impact exercise for people over 60 that involves walking in ankle‑deep water on the beach, which increases leg muscle work and circulation while reducing joint strain. Meanwhile, the Costa Daurada region faces significant accessibility gaps: only about half of its 34 beaches meet the standards for people with reduced mobility, despite recent installations of ramps, amphibious chairs and assisted‑bath zones.

Parallel social projects target vulnerable families. The Fundación La Caixa’s “Caixa Proinfancia” programme provides free summer camps for children in Navarra who face economic hardship, health challenges, or single‑parent situations, ensuring they can experience beach outings and recreational activities. In Portugal, the new Atlas Global de Riesgo, an AI‑driven travel‑health tool, compiles up‑to‑date medical, climatic and safety data for over 200 countries, helping travelers and clinicians assess risks before departing.

These initiatives collectively seek to make the summer season healthier and more inclusive across the Iberian Peninsula.
