Avilés promotes healthy city strategy to support public health
The city of Avilés is advancing a 'healthy city' strategy designed to improve quality of life and alleviate pressure on the public healthcare system. During the general assembly of the Spanish Network of Healthy Cities (RECS), Mayor Mariví Monteserín highlighted the city's transition from being one of Spain's most polluted industrial hubs in 1979 to a model of environmental sustainability.
The strategy focuses on two main pillars: maintaining a high-quality healthcare system and creating healthy urban spaces to promote preventive care. Key initiatives include urban renaturalization, the establishment of climate refuges, and the promotion of new models for consumption and urban mobility to support healthy aging within the local environment.
