Avinor, the state-owned airport operator, has warned of a significant budget shortfall for airport projects in northern Norway. The company estimates that the costs for the Bodø and Mo i Rana airport developments could increase by 1 to 1.5 billion NOK by 2030.

Originally budgeted at 13.9 billion NOK in 2027 values, the projects are now expected to be approximately 10 percent more expensive. Anders Kirsebom, Avinor's group director for airport projects, noted that the cost increases are estimates subject to ongoing supplier negotiations. Full forecasts are expected in early 2027.

Several factors are driving these increases, including the need to relocate the Bodø airport by 900 meters to facilitate urban development and the requirement for the Norwegian Armed Forces to maintain a significant presence in the area. Avinor indicated that the changing security situation, influenced by the war in Ukraine, has created new requirements and higher costs. The company expressed that it is unreasonable for civil aviation to bear these additional expenses and is engaging with the military and relevant government departments regarding the matter.
