Avis Billed Canadian Traveler $4,300 for Impossible Mileage

A Toronto man, Yuehao Huang, is disputing a CA$5,900 (approximately US$4,300) charge from Avis rental car company. The company claims Huang exceeded his prepaid mileage limit by roughly 28,933 kilometers (18,000 miles) during a seven-day family trip in September.

Huang contends the charge is mathematically impossible, noting that covering such a distance in one week would require driving at an average speed of 172 km/h (107 mph) without ever stopping for fuel, food, or sleep. His iPhone logs indicate he traveled only about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) during the period, which included time spent hiking.

Despite presenting evidence to Avis and attempting to resolve the matter through an American Express dispute, Huang has been unable to secure a refund. The company initially stated it would investigate but has reportedly instructed him to resubmit his complaint.
