AVIS type 3 completes Monte Carlo Rally 100 years after original attempt
A century after a failed attempt due to snow, the sole surviving AVIS type 3 has completed the Monte Carlo Rally. The vehicle, representing Austrian automotive heritage, finished an eleven-day journey that began on August 25.
Dr. Robert Krickl, an Austrian researcher and historian, led the project to restore the car, which was discovered in a Swiss barn as a “rusty skeleton with rotten wood.” Because the AVIS brand disappeared nearly a century ago, spare parts were unavailable, requiring a meticulous reconstruction process that utilized 80-90% original centennial elements.
The restored vehicle features a small twin-cylinder engine producing 20 horsepower and a top speed of 60 km/h. The successful completion of the rally serves as a tribute to the original 1926 Austrian factory team that was unable to finish the race.
